Basic Strategy for Blackjack Part 2
Blackjack
Sep 10, 2000, 11:00
By M. Wilson Staff

This is basic strategy for multideck games of blackjack, such as are played in Atlantic City casinos. These instructions assume the dealer must stand on any 17, doubling is permitted after splitting, but no resplitting of pairs is allowed.

HARD HANDS (Those without an Ace)

If you have a total of 17-21, always Stand.

If you have a total of 13-16, Stand on dealer's upcard of 2-6; Hit on 7-A.

If you have a total of 12, Stand if dealer has 4-6; otherwise Hit.

If you have a total of 11, Double Down on everything except an A.

If you have a total of 10, Double Down on everything except 10 or A.

If you have a total of 9, Double on dealer's 3-6; otherwise Hit.

If you have a total of 4-8, always Hit.

WHAT TO DO WITH PAIRS

If you have a pair of Aces, always Split, if the casino permits you. If not, Double on a dealer's 6 and Hit on everything else.

If you have a pair of 10s (or two cards of value 10), always Stand.

If you have a pair of 9s, Split if dealer has 2-6, 8 or 9; otherwise Stand. Don't Split on 7.

If you have a pair of 8s, always Split.

If you have a pair of 7s, Split on dealer's 2-7.

If you have a pair of 6s, Split on dealer's 2-6; Hit dealer's 7-A.

If you have a pair of 5s, Double on everything except 10 or A.

If you have a pair of 4s, Split on dealer's 5 or 6; otherwise Hit.

If you have a pair of 3s, Split on dealer's 2-7; Hit on dealer's 8-A.

If you have a pair of 2s, Split on dealer's 2-7; Hit dealer's 8-A.

SOFT HANDS (Remember, any hand containing an Ace is a soft hand.)

If you have A, 10; always Stand.

If you have A, 9; always Stand.

If you have A, 8; always Stand.

If you have A, 7; Double on dealer's 3-6; Stand on dealer's 2, 7 or 8; Hit on 9, 10 or A.

If you have A, 6; Double on dealer's 3-6; Hit on everything else.

If you have A, 5; Double on dealer's 4-6; Hit if dealer's card is anything else.

If you have A, 4; Double on dealer's 4-6; Hit if dealer has anything else.

If you have A, 3; Double if dealer has upcard of 5 or 6; Hit if dealer has anything else.

If you have A, 2; Double if dealer has upcard of 5 or 6; again, Hit if dealer has anything else.

If you have A, A; and the casino will not allow you to Split Aces, Hit on all except if dealer has 6, in which case you should Double.
