Knowing when to talk may be more important than knowing what to say, but if you don't know what your casino is saying to you, you could be left holding the bag.  Read this Gambling Glossary and learn to speak their speak their language.

ACTION
Slang for a Bet or Wager.

BOOKIE
Someone that takes bets on sporting events.

BANKROLL
The amount of money you have to gamble.

BEARD
Person employed by the bettor to place a bet, so the bookmaker won't know who is betting.  Professional handicappers often use beards to
place their bets.

BUCK
A $100 Bet.

BUST
To draw over 21 in the game of Blackjack.

CASINO ADVANTAGE
The edge the casino has over the player in any game due to the rules of the game.  Also called the "EDGE".

CHALK
The favored team.

CHALK PLAYER
A Gambler who usually plays the favorite team.

CIRCLE GAME
A game with limited action.

COMPS
The free gifts a casino gives to its players.

COVER
If a team wins by an amount equal or in excess of the spread that team is said to have "covered" the spread.

DIME BET
A $1000 Bet.

DOG
Another term for underdog.

DOG PLAYER
Someone that usually bets the underdog.

DOLLAR BET
A $100 Bet.

DOUBLE BET
A Bet twice the size of one's usual amount.

DOUBLE DOWN
A Player's option to double his original bet in blackjack if he feels he has an unusually strong chance of winning.

EVEN MONEY
A Wager on which neither side lays any odds.

EXACTA
A horse racing bet where that player must pick the first two horses in exact order.

FIXED
Fixed games are games that aren't played fairly where the players often under perform to influence the outcome of the game.

FUTURE BET
Bets on a game in the distant future.

HANDICAPPER
A person who's job is to sell his opinion on sports wagering.

HEDGING
Betting on the opposite side to guarantee winning at least some money.

HOLDING YOUR OWN
Breaking even.

HOLE CARD
The dealer's face down card in Blackjack.

HOOK
A half point added to the betting lines.

HOOKED
Losing a bet by one-half a point.

JUICE
A bookmaker's commission.

LAYING THE POINTS
Betting the favorite.

LINE
The Odds listed for a particular game.

LINEMAKER
The person who sets the betting line.

LOCK
A Team that has an extremely good chance of winning.

LOOSE
A slot machine that pays off a higher percentage than the machines around it.

MIDDLES
Betting on both sides at different point spreads allowing you to win in either outcome

MONEY LINES
Odds expressed in terms of money.

NEWSPAPER LINE
The betting lines published in the newspaper.

NICKEL
A $500 Bet.

ODDSMAKER
A Linemaker.

OFF THE BOARD
A game a bookie will not take bets on.

OFFICIAL LINE
The line the bookmaker uses for betting.

OUTLAW LINE
An early line bookmakers use as a test or a trial line before actually setting the official line.

OVER & UNDER
A Bet on the total combined score of both teams being either over or under a posted amount.

PARLAY
Betting on multiple teams in which all teams must hit in order to win the bet.

POINTSPREAD
The amount of points the bettor must give or take on any given game. Also called "the line".

POST TIME
The Scheduled starting time.

PRICE
The odds or the pointspread.

PROPOSITION BET
A Wager on a particular game event such as how many free throws will be made.

PUSH
A Tie. All money is returned to the bettors.

ROUND ROBIN
A form of parlay betting in which we wager various combining team wagers.
A 3-team robin is team
1 to 2
1 to 3
2 to 3
A 4-team is team
1 to 2
1 to 3
1 to 4
2 to 3
2 to 4
3 to 4
A 5-team etc..,

SCRATCH
To call of all Bets.

SIDE
When one side of a wager wins and the other side ties.

SMART MONEY
The team favored by professional handicappers.

STEAM
When a line starts to move rapidly due to intense interest from bettors.

TRIFECTA
A horse racing bet in which a punter must select the first three horses in exact order.

VIGORISH
The commission paid to the bookmaker.  Also called the "Vig" or the "Juice".

WIN BET
A horse racing bet in which a punter must select the horse that comes in first.

ZERO JUICE
A bookmaker that charges no Vigorish.
