Basketball drills exist for every facet of the game with the most important basketball drills focusing on the fundamentals of ball handling. Players must first utililize basketball drills to master handling the basketball before attempting any other aspect of the game. Basketball drills that focus on ball handling teach players how to control their dribbling and how to use both hands during the course of a game. The most frequently used basketball drills to teach these ball handling skills are Two Balls, Shutter – Step, Crossover Dribble, and the Figure Eight Dribble.

Two Balls is a basketball drill that is done with two basketballs, which can improve ball handling skills immensely. While dribbling one of the basketballs down low to the floor with your left hand, use your right hand to dribble the other basketball around your right leg. Repeat this basketball drill after switching hands, and implement a cross over by criss crossing the two basketballs.

The Shutter – Step is probably one of the most efficient basketball drills and requires the least amount of ball handling capability. With the basketball in your right hand start dribbling down the court at a moderate pace. After dribbling a total of four times, step down hard with your left foot. If this basketball drill is performed accurately it will produce a resounding screech on the gymnasium floor and your upper body will temporarily stop moving. Immdediately follow this step with several more hard steps; this will give your opponent the impression that your next move could go either right or left. However, you are going to restart the dribble without shifting direction.

Used as both a defensive tool and a means to free a player up for a scoring opportunity, the Crossover Dribble is one of the many basketball drills that is executed without looking down at the basketball. Placing the basketball in your right hand, begin dribbling down the court while moving the ball from the right to the left hand. Repeat this basketball drill until you are able to do it at a full sprint for ten-minute intervals.

Once you have mastered the Crossover Dribble you are ready to attempt one of the more challenging basketball drills, the Figure Eight Dribble. Standing with your feet apart while leaning to the right, begin dribbling with your right hand at the outside of the right leg. Proceed to lean to the left while dribbling with the left hand. The Figure Eight Dribble basketball drill requires giving the basketball a hard, quick tap from behind when switching hands. Repeat the basketball drill while moving forward, dribbling a Figure Eight behind you as you walk. As you become progressively faster you will be able to keep your feet in front of the ball while dribbling a Figure Eight.

Learning the basic fundamentals of basketball can only be accomplished through repeated use of basketball drills. Two Balls, Shutter – Step, Crossover Dribble, and the Figure Eight Dribble teach players how to control their dribbling and how to use both hands during the course of a basketball game. These basketball drills, along with many others, lay the foundation necessary in order for the players to take the game to the next level.
