Online Sportsbook Betting
Sports Betting

The first online sportsbook was the product of an offshore telephone wagering service that decided an online sportsbook would be a more convenient medium in which to reach bettors. The idea of putting a sportsbook online caught on quickly and is now a multi-billion dollar industry.

When placing a wager through an online sportsbook, you can choose to bet on virtually any sporting event in the world. Elect to bet on the traditional lines such as football, basketball, and baseball or opt for propositions on cricket, rugby, tennis, and auto racing. Whichever odds you prefer you will be sure to find them at an online sportsbook.

An online sportsbook also presents the luxury of providing an extensive array of wagers for a bettor to make a selection. There is traditional fixed odds wagering, index betting, and market style wagering – just to name a few. The most recent type of betting to make an appearance at an online sportsbook is pool betting. This form of wagering takes the traditional office football pool and incorporates it into the twenty first century via online sportsbooks.

What appears to be another growing trend in the online sportsbook arena is that of fantasy sports leagues. This involves putting your own sports team together, which can be made up of any professional athlete involved in a particular sport. The most common fantasy sports leagues are football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and NASCAR racing. With this variation of an online sportsbook, points earned are calculated according to each individual athlete’s performance instead of the final score of a sporting event.

Based on the convenience of betting at an online sportsbook and the wide variety of lines offered, it is no wonder that most bettors prefer placing wagers over the Internet. Although the traditional land based sportsbook will never disappear you can bet that the online sportsbook is here to stay.
