Pointspreads - What Do They Mean?
Sports Betting

By Kelly Reynolds Staff

Betting online is generally the same as betting sports at a Las Vegas sportsbook. With regard to both internet betting and sports betting on land, a player must understand the point spread or betting lines in order to increase the chances of winning.

The purpose of a point spread is to equalize the betting lines on each side. Even if the amount bet on the underdog is equal to the amount bet on the favorite, the house is still guaranteed to make a profit. In the world of sports betting, the house receives at least ten percent of all betting that occurs regardless of which team covers.

When it comes to online sports betting lines, the best linesmakers are the ones who can guess what the majority of the betting public perceives. These betting lines mirror the average bettor’s perception of both teams, and not necessarily the true strengths and weaknesses that exist. However, these betting lines are frequently wrong because the general betting public tends to overestimate high profile teams and write off the others.

Whether you prefer the medium of online betting or the traditional land sports betting, always remember that the key to winning is to remain an objective bettor at all times. Do not bet against a particular team based on the fact that you want that team to lose. Also, it is generally not a good idea to make bets on your favorite team if you are a die-hard fan. For those sports betting fans that are able to remain objective when betting, use the home team to your advantage. Local coverage of the home team is not usually shared with the rest of the country. This is one useful betting tool that can give you the edge over other bettors and increase your winnings.
