How to Play Fantasy Football

Since fantasy football emerged in the early sixties, there has been the develeopment of hundreds of different ways to play the sport of fantasy football. As a result, there is no one set of instructions that fantasy football players are able to consult before constructing a team and entering the realm of fantasy sports. However, there are some basic ideas in place to help guide you when putting together your own team of fantasy football players.

Basically, fantasy football consists of a group of people who become coach, general manager, and owner of a team composed of real NFL or college football players. In fantasy football players are chosen according to individual skill and not on the basis of team performance. Scoring points for your fantasy football team depends on how the chosen members of the team perform.

Players of a fantasy football team are chosen according to a draft. The most popular form of drafting used in fantasy football is a serpentine draft that mirrors the system used by the NFL, which reverses the order each round.

After completing the draft, the fantasy football season begins which usually corresponds with the NFL or college football league from which the players have been chosen. At the beginning of each week all fantasy football teams in a league submit a list of starting players. Scores are calculated according to individual player statistics based on yards, touchdowns, and any other type of category chosen by the fantasy football team owner. Based on the points scored there is usually a winner and loser for each fantasy football game played. However, in a “total points” league no winner is decided until the final game of the fantasy football season.

Whatever method you choose when putting together a fantasy football team it is important to keep track of which players have sustained injuries. Although fantasy football can be a great form of entertainment, if you are not willing to put forth the time and effort required to maintain a team it is probably futile to construct one in the first place.
