A good crop of NFL teachers

The NFL has a lot of really good coaches in its league. In fact, I think there are more good coaches than there are not good coaches in football right now.

Pittsburgh's Bill Cowher has been excellent over the years. He has lost assistant coaches and players in his time with the Steelers, and his teams have still done well. That's pretty doggone good to me.

Bill Belichick led the Patriots to the championship in just his second year as their head coach.
I've always been impressed with Bill Belichick. He helped lead his New England team to a win in last February's Super Bowl, and he and his coaching staff did one of the all-time outstanding coaching jobs in that game against St. Louis.

I remember when he was the defensive coordinator for Bill Parcells with the New York Giants, and I always enjoyed talking football with him. They say that some players are like gym rat players. Well, Belichick was like a gym rat coach -- and he still is. When he was with the Giants, he just enjoyed sitting around and talking football. If you ever got away from talking football, he would just go right back to it, and that's something I like. I always like to talk some football and Belichick's the same way. He's a coach that I've always respected and admired.

Mike Shanahan in Denver, Mike Holmgren in Seattle -- and before that with Green Bay -- and San Francisco's Steve Mariucci all do a heckuva job with their teams.

Philadelphia's Andy Reid is another really good coach. I've always had a thing for old offensive linemen, and Reid's an old offensive lineman. He somehow became a tight ends coach who somehow became a quarterbacks coach for Brett Favre and the Packers in Green Bay. Now he's the head coach of the Eagles. It's nice to see those types of guys get to be head coaches.

Reid's a hard-working and very bright guy. He's the type of coach who can be successful in the NFL today. He can get along with any type of player, and his guys always play hard for him. He has the personality and ability to be a success, and I really like what he's done in Philadelphia so far.

First-year NFL head coach Steve Spurrier will be excellent with Washington. I've always thought he was a pro coach coaching in college, rather than a college coach. I think he'll make the adjustment to the pros and do well with the Redskins.
