Super Bowl XXXVI - The Entertainment Event of the Year
Sports

By Kelly Reynolds Staff

Super Bowl XXXVI will be played on February 3, 2002 in New Orleans and promises to be the most extravagant Super Bowl to date. In addition to the main event at the Super Bowl, fans can look forward to performances by the Boston Pops, Mariah Carey and U2.

Originally scheduled to be played on January 27, the Super Bowl was pushed ahead one week due to the tragedy occurring on September 11, 2001. In order to show empathy and support for the citizens of New York NFL officials decided to cancel all upcoming football games that week, which resulted in changing the date of the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl pregame show will begin with a variety of American classics performed by the Boston Pops. Led by Conductor Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops will add the Super Bowl performance to their vast list of concerts saluting the United States of America. In addition to the performance at Super Bowl XXXVI, the Boston Pops have also performed at the White House, Lincoln Memorial and the Statue of Liberty.

The Boston Pops will also accompany singer Mariah Carey as she sings the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXVI. As the best selling female pop artist of the 1990’s, Carey will add her name to the impressive list of stars to perform the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Celebrities that have sung renditions of the National Anthem at previous Super Bowls include Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Whitney Houston, Garth Brooks, and Faith Hill – just to name a few.

As the nation’s highest rated television program, no expense is spared when booking the act for the Super Bowl halftime show. Performing at half time of Super Bowl XXXVI will be ten time Grammy Award winners U2. Over a course of 20 years, U2 has released 14 albums with combined record sales surpassing 100 million copies. This year’s Super Bowl half time show will be sure to mesmerize the 900,000 million plus fans watching from around the world.

In addition to the Boston Pops, Mariah Carey and U2, fans watching Super Bowl XXXVI can look forward to many more spectacular performances throughout the day. These performances are sure to take place both on and off the field at Super Bowl XXXVI, the entertainment event of the year.
