Handicapping: Odds or Points?
Sports Betting
Jan 17, 2002, 10:39
By Kelly Reynolds Staff

Sports betting is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world. Incorporated initially as land based establishments, sportsbooks have permeated into the online arena over the span of the last few years. As a result of computer technology, more people than ever have been able to enjoy sports betting as a form of recreation.

Most people who partake in sports betting seek the aid of a handicapper. A handicapper basically tries to predict who will win a particular sporting event. Handicapping can be conveyed in two different forms: odd or points. If expressed via odds, the handicapper will make predictions based on the odds of a team winning a game. Some handicappers take the process one step further and attempt to forecast the amount of points by which a particular team will win.

There are several factors that must be taken into account with regard to handicapping. Experts in the field of sports betting will compile as much information as possible surrounding each sporting event. This data includes team statistics, injuries, trends, weather, home field advantage, and previous game history existing between the two teams.

Instead of choosing to rely on somebody else’s analytical skills, many bettors prefer to research the teams themselves and reach their own conclusions. While this may take a lot of time and effort, the same resources that a handicapper relies on for information are available to the everday person. This information can be found in daily newspapers, magazines, television, and the Internet. As is the case with anything, the more effort you put into researching the individual teams the more successful your handicapping will become.
